2009 Balanced Man Scholarship
The Indiana Zeta chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon at Valparaiso University gives four scholarships to to incoming male students who exemplify our four pillars: leader, scholar, athlete and gentleman.

About the Scholarship
The Balanced Man Ideal
Sigma Phi Epsilon is a social fraternity at the forefront of shattering the stereotypical “fratboy” image. The Indiana Zeta chapter at Valparaiso is an excellent example of the organization’s commitment to building responsible and balanced men to be future community leaders. As a Residential Learning Community, a SAFE House and last year’s top academic and intramural fraternity, SigEps at Valpo work to be become better athletes, scholars, gentlemen, and leaders. These are the four pillars of a Balanced Man. And, like the Ancient Greeks, we believe in developing a Sound Mind and Sound Body as the way to live a fulfilling life. This is the Balanced man Ideal.
Why a Scholarship?
Sigma Phi Epsilon believes learning how to balance roles and activities in college is one of the most important life skills one can learn. We believe recognizing students who exhibit balance, all-around excellence, is one way to promote this important idea. Therefore, every year, we offer four Balanced Man Scholarships in the amount of (1) $1000 and (3) $500. These scholarships are offered to incoming male students who have excelled in the development of a Sound Mind and a Sound Body during their high school careers. Our aim is to reward men who exemplify these qualities, as we believe they are essential to leading a balanced life.
The Application Process
The process begins with all freshman male students receiving an application and a letter explaining the scholarship. Upon review of the returned applications, every applicant is given an interview. From this interview, a scholarship committee chooses semi-finalists. The semi-finalists are given a second interview and invited to attend the annual Balanced Man Scholarship Banquet where the four scholarship winners are announced. The scholarship selection is always a difficult process as there are always many very qualified men. Often the scholarship committee will interview as many as 100 applicants in the attempt to choose four scholarship winners.
Applicants for and recipients of the Balanced Man Scholarship are NOT obligated to join the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. Our goal remains to award exceptional young men who have exemplified our four pillars of leaders, scholar, athlete, and gentleman in their high school careers.
